#08: Exterior Design - Capturing the Key Design Elements of the 930

We're mixing things up with the SanctumEgo project, blending the best of Porsche's old and new eras. It's all about combining the cutting-edge features of the 997.1 Turbo with the classic style of the 930 Turbo. We want to fuse comfort, performance, and a dash of nostalgia.

In our last blog, we talked about starting with a three-week sketch phase to nail down the look. Then, from week four to seven, we used Fusion 360, this really cool CAD software, to bring those sketches to life.

We focused on key design bits from the 930 early on, like the spoiler, the unique front and rear bumpers, the big hood opening, and the boxy intercooler. Our twist? Recreating almost the entire car in carbon fiber, except for the doors and roof, to make it lighter, stronger, and more modern.

We got creative with carbon fiber, reimagining the 930's features like the horizontal rubber inserts on the bumpers, the 'harmonica' impact absorbers up front, and those big rubber bumpers around the rear license plate. These got a sleek, glossy black carbon fiber makeover in the SanctumEgo.

By week seven, we had more parts sorted out, like the subtle fog lamps inspired by the 993, the original 930 front lights, redesigned rear fender air intakes, and custom rear lights made by a German shop specializing in 930 parts.

We had a big decision about the front hood's 'cut lines' – stick with the 997.1's lines or nod to the original? We went with honoring the original, extending the lines to the bumper to keep that iconic 'smile.'

Next up? Turning these designs into engineering CAD for manufacturing. But first, we need a 'donor' car for a full-body scan, setting the foundation for this unique mix of Porsche's past and future.
